Chita fabrics from Alcobaça can´t deny their Indian origin for etymology gives them away. The word “chita” comes from the Hindi word “chitra”, which means “shiny, brilliant, of many colours”. Those cotton fabrics have a humble and colonial birth; they were made for European people with low incomes. They were printed with striking designs of stripes and flowers much to the taste of humble people.
